The tale of mankind’s quest for a healthy life is as old as their story and countries in Asia have precious knowledge that can help maintain health and prevent diseases rather than only curing diseases. Ayurveda which means the “Science of life” holds the outcome of that quest as a treasure of ancient wisdom. As globalization reduces distances, and as technology improves at a rapid pace, we are faced with a multitude of new diseases due to the abnormal and faulty diet and life style.
These diseases can be categorised under a new group of diseases called life style generated diseases or life style diseases which can include Alzheimer’s, atherosclerosis, asthma, some kinds of cancer, chronic liver disease or cirrhosis, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, Type 2 diabetes, heart disease, metabolic syndrome, chronic renal failure, osteoporosis, stroke, depression and obesity.
These conditions affect the population at their productive age and add to the cost of additional health care, absenteeism, disability, low productivity, and workers’ compensation costs. Traditional medicine with its do’s and don’ts and with its holistic approach to any given condition and life, caters better to the today’s life style crisis of people where they have lost their contact with nature. Therefore the time has come to revisit those ancient practices , to walk again through those steps towards a healthier tomorrow and a healthy next generation. Symposium programme
